"Scrap-A-Thon 3" Day 3 / Calvinball 2019 – Resist Technique Scrapbook Layout
It’s Day 3 of the Scrap-A-Thon 3 with Nicole Jones 911 and I learned a new Resist technique that I’ve never tried before. The technique was to use a stencil on watercolor paper, put on a layer of gesso, remove the stencil, add some water color and then wipe away the color. Everywhere the gesso was applied, the color will be wiped away leaving behind the stencil pattern.
I used a 12×12 template of hexagons from The Crafter’s Workshop and applied some Kuretaki Gansai Tambi watercolors. I don’t think I let it dry enough because when I applied the paper towel, my color almost disappeared. I thought about applying more water colors, but thought that I would try some sprays instead. I sprayed on some Dylusions Ink Sprays and then wiped away the color again and ended up with a much more saturated color.
I had just randomly picked out colors when did my resist technique; so when I went looking for a picture, I had a tough time finding one that looked good with my background. I couldn’t find a picture that was already printed, and I went searching my phone pics and found some pictures of my Mom at the Butterfly Conservatory in Key West, FL. We had just went on a cruise in January this years, and I thought the colors of my mixed media piece would be perfect for the colors in the pics. I ended up choosing the papers shown below to complement my mixed media resist background …
Distressed Blue Paper from My Minds Eye – Breaking Free
Blue Dots Paper from My Mind’s Eye – Fine and Dandy
Blue Floral from My Mind’s Eye – Ooh La La (not shown)
I really liked the picture of my Mom shown in the photo above, but I really wanted the layout to focus on the butterfly that landed on my Mom and stayed with her for about 10 minutes. That butterfly just wanted to be with her and she was so delighted to have it visit.
The title is partially handwritten and I added the word “Flower” using the Marquee Thickers (which are a beautiful light wood grain with gold glitter outline). The butterflies were made using several butterfly punches and a leftover from playing around with Nuvo Shimmer Powders.
I layered the butterfly punches and then lifted the wings to create dimension. I am also playing along with Calvin Ball 2019 which is a scrapbooking challenge … so the color green, the addition of using my own handwriting, star, floral pattern paper, wood veneer, bling, enamel dots, butterflies, etc. were all added to meet the challenge!!! So much fun!!!
I’m very happy with the way the layout ended up. It’s really a beautiful layout for my beautiful Mom.
I wasn’t digging how my mixed media background came out and I almost ditched it and started over; but I’ve worked with mixed media enough to know that once I started layering things on top that it would look good. I always love learning something knew and I liked trying out the resist technique.
Three layouts done in three days and 28 Days to go!!!!
