"Scrap-A-Thon 3" Day 11 – Using a Scrapbook Recipe to Create a Layout

It’s Day 11 of the Scrap-A-Thon 3 with Nicole Jones 911 and for this day we needed to create a recipe (or list of ingredients to use) to create a scrapbook layout.  I think this is a great idea because it limits the choices of what things to use.  I’ve been watching a lot of Missy Whidden YouTube videos and I love her layouts.  So, I decided to create a recipe from the things that were inspired by Missy.  Here’s the recipe I used.
Scrap-A-Thon 3 Day 11 Recipe

  • 1 Cut File from Paige Evans
  • Gesso on Patterned Paper Background
  • Mixed Media Background using Inks and Sprays
  • Stencil
  • Texture Paste
  • Thread
  • Pastel Colors
  • Tone on Tone Embellishments

I started with a light blue patterned paper background and added some gesso to the page.  I didn’t apply the gesso over the entire page, because I wanted some of the blue to show and was planning to just add the mixed media around the area where the cut file was going.
Missy uses a lot of products from ShimmerzPaints.com but unfortunately I don’t have any of their products.  She gets such amazing colors and shimmer with the Shimmerz Inklingz, Creameez, Vibez and other Shimmerz products.  One of these days I’m going to buy something from Shimmerz Paints to try it out, but for this layout I didn’t have any of these products.
I hadn’t used my distress oxide inks in a while, so I decided that I would use Distress Inks in blue, yellow, pink and red.  I was trying to match the distress oxide colors to the colors in the patterned paper I used to back the cut file, but unfortunately I didn’t do a good job matching the yellow.  I originally intended to put yellow behind the yellow flower, blue behind the blue flower and red/pink behind the red/pink flowers.

I also decided that I wanted a little gold in my background and I splattered some Heidi Swapp Gold Color Shine.  My background wasn’t quite dry enough and the distress oxide also reacted to the color shine and lifted some of the color away which wasn’t what I was expecting.  It was looking like a hot mess!!! And when I placed the cut file on top of my background, the yellow was really off.  So, I turned the paper around so that the yellow was under the blue flower and it looked much better.
I decided that maybe I could use a stencil and some texture paste … it couldn’t hurt because I wasn’t liking the background anyway.  I used a grid stencil and texture paste randomly on the background and then let the page dry overnight.

The picture I used in this layout is another picture of my two friends Marilu and Amita.  To finish the page, I added embellishments in the same color tones as the cut file.

I don’t think my layout did Missy’s techniques justice because her mixed media layouts are gorgeous … but I think mine came out ok.  Here’s a link to Missy Whidden’s YouTube channel.
